Yachting usually makes people think of sipping wine and letting one's hair down at sea. However, the famous yacht race from Sydney, Australia to Hobart on the island of Tasmania is no place to relax. Taking place on Boxing Day, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is one of the most difficult yacht races around, and its wave of popularity is steadily growing. The first race was held in 1945, with the winner finishing in six days, 14 hours, and 22 minutes. Over the years, yachts and their crews have set new speed records in the race. The current one was set by Wild Oats XI in 2005.

The answers to all these mysteries can be found on NGC's Ancient X-Files this month.

However, many visitors still insist on taking a boat out to the island to see what it was all about. Alcatraz is now a huge tourist destination, and the new, nighttime tour of the facilities offers an intense experience. One visitor said the trip made him feel like he was going to prison himself. Nighttime visitors also get to hear scarier stories and listen to recordings of prisoners and guards from the past. It is a scary and sad place, but Alcatraz, just like San Francisco, continues to fascinate people today.

The law banning bullfighting in the northeastern region of Catalonia was passed in July of 2010 and will take effect on January 1, 2012. Considered a long-standing Spanish tradition, this blood sport has been the target of heated debate and regarded as cruel by animal rights activists. Both fans and opponents of bullfighting showed up at Barcelona's farewell event.
