At one talent show, his band was so loud that the principal 1)cut off their microphones. After graduating, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he began performing folk music in coffee shops as Bob Dylan, a 2)nod to the poet Dylan Thomas. On the 3)shift from rock to folk, Dylan called the latter “more of a serious type of thing” that was capable of expressing deeper feelings. He dropped out of college after his freshman year and headed to New York City, where he hoped to play music and meet his idol Woody Guthrie. Dylan began performing in Greenwich Village clubs in 1961, and after a favorable review in the New York Times, he was signed by Columbia Records.
