Luke Gamble is a village 1)vet from Dorset, on the south coast of England. Through his charity WVS (Worldwide 1)Veterinary Service), he teams up with organizations and individuals in remote locations who need help with their animals. Luke’s destination is Chiang Mai, the largest city in northern Thailand. On arrival, Luke is 1)staggered by the large number of 2)stray dogs in the streets. Care for Dogs was set up three years ago to help these poor animals, and Luke is here to provide the shelter with some much needed veterinary support. He is met by co-founder Karin from Switzerland, who tells him about their 3)neutering, rescue and 4)adoption programs. His biggest challenge is Magnum, who has a chronic infection on his paw. Luke removes the infected tissue, dresses the wound, and covers his paw with a protective boot made from a 5)flip-flop and one of his socks.

Next, it’s off to an elephant hospital run by Friends of the Asian Elephant to visit some much larger patients. The hospital’s director, Dr. Preecha, introduces Luke to Motala, a 48-year-old elephant who lost a leg after stepping on a mine in Burma. After Luke helps fit the elephant with an 1)innovative 5)prosthetic leg, he begins to walk 2)tentatively, using his trunk as a crutch.

◎mites 疥蟲
種類繁多，會寄生在體表、耳道或呼吸道，也稱為「蟎」、「恙蟲」。會引發過敏及皮膚病。
◎lice 蝨子
大多出現在天竺鼠、兔子身上，會引發搔癢、掉毛等症狀。lice 的單數拼法為 louse。
體內寄生蟲除了上述的焦蟲及絛蟲，還有 heartworm 心絲蟲（學名 Dirofilaria immitis），是透過蚊子叮咬傳染，寄生於心臟及肺動脈。心絲蟲病雖是人畜共通，但對狗危害最大。
