No Longer Chasing Chickens
When Lu Yen-hsun defeated American Andy Roddick in the fourth round of last summer’s Wimbledon Championships, he shocked the tennis world. After all, Roddick had become a 1)crowd favorite after losing to Roger Federer in an epic final the year before, and many expected him to challenge for the title again. With patient play, however, the 26-year-old Lu finally broke Roddick’s 2)serve in the fifth set, and went on to win the biggest match of his young career. In his post-match interview, which he gave in English, Lu 3)dedicated his victory to his family and his father, who had recently passed away. “I did it for my father,” he said, “I did it for myself also. Long before Lu was playing on Wimbledon’s famous grass courts, he was chasing chickens on a farm in Taoyuan, where he grew up. As a boy, he would wake up early to help his father catch the chickens, which was no easy task. “It’s very tough work,” Lu 1)revealed. “They’re always working between one in the morning to six in the morning, very early.” While neither the hours nor the 2)awful smell appealed to him, the job gave him the speed and 3)agility he displays on the tennis court today. Yani Tseng, just 21 years old, won the Women’s British Open golf 1)tournament in August by a single 2)stroke. Having already won the Kraft Nabisco Championship earlier in the year and the LPGA Championship in 2008, she’s become the youngest female golfer in the modern era to win three major championships.
In her climb up the rankings, Yani Tseng has followed in the footsteps of a number of leading female golfers from Asia, like South Korea’s Se Ri Pak. It’s hall-of-famer Annika Sorenstam, however, who Tseng 3)identifies as her idol. She carries a note from her hero that says “Trust your ability,” and even bought Sorenstam’s house outside Orlando, Florida in 2009.
