With a population of around 70,000, Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, is nometropolis. But what it lacks in size, it 1)makes up for in history, culture and charm. Santa Fe was founded by the Spanish way back in 1607, and an ideal place to learn about its origins is the New Mexico History Museum and adjacent Palace of the Governors. These are both 2)situated right off the Plaza, which is the heart of old Santa Fe. Speaking of old, excellent examples of Spanish colonial architecture remain throughout the city, including St. Francis Cathedral and the adobe San Miguel Mission. Santa Fe is also one of the best places in the country to shop for Native American art and handicrafts. No wonder it’s been designated as a UNESCO Creative City.

Santa Fe boasts a thriving and diverse arts scene. The city attracted a number of artists in the early 20th century, most notably Georgia O’Keeffe. Many of her paintings inspired by New Mexico’s picturesque desert landscapes are on display at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, located just northwest of the Plaza. For something more 1)contemporary, check out a few of the many galleries on Canyon Road. Santa Fe has a rich musical tradition as well. The 2)renowned Santa Fe Opera began in 1957, when Igor Stravinsky was on hand for the performance of his opera The Rake’s Progress. Since then, the SFO has staged many important productions in its beautiful open-air theater.

●Santa Fe Opera 聖塔菲歌劇院
聖塔菲歌劇院是音樂指揮家 John Crosby 所創立，並於一九五七年至二○○○年期間擔任總監。聖塔菲歌劇院有兩千一百二十八個座位，與其他劇院不同之處，在於聖塔菲歌劇院的舞台沒有懸吊系統 (fly system) 來降下佈景，沒有鏡框式舞台 (proscenium arch)，且劇院的兩邊是開放式的，舞台後方可以完全打開讓觀眾看到日落景致。
●San Miguel Mission 聖米格爾傳教所
聖米格爾傳教所是西班牙殖民時期的傳教所，約建於一六一○至一六二六年間，被認為是美國本土最古老的教堂。在經過普韋布洛叛亂 (Pueblo Revolt) 後重建，為西班牙士兵所使用。泥磚風貌仍然保存良好，是美國的國家歷史地標 (National Historical Landmark) 之一。
